The Year in Architecture: From Frank Gehry to Ice Cube, ARTINFO's Picks for the Best of 2011
Best Addition to the New York City Skyline: 8 Spruce Street
As the sun sets over the residential skyscraper that sits at 8 Spruce Street, lower Manhattan glimmers under the reflections of its rippling metallic surface. Its other name, New York by Gehry, is telling of the impact it has on the city. Standing at 876 feet tall, it takes its place as another iconic symbol in the skyline alongside the Chrysler and Empire State buildings, as well as Frank Gehry's favorite, the Woolworth — just as the architect had hoped. "I was trying to make a New York building,” Gehry told ARTINFO. “There’s a certain character of New York. I’m standing next to the Woolworth building, which is the number one on my hit parade. I could do this to it [raises a middle finger] or I could do this to it [makes a hugging gesture].” Ultimately, he told us, he went with the hug.
