NEW YORK — Starting February 8, fashion editors, bloggers, buyers, and models will take over New York for fashion week, which is actually nine days of non-stop presentations and runway shows. Some younger, edgier designers show show at MADE at Milk Studios while many more brands ensconce themselves at Lincoln Center, the home of the official Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. But a select few opted for gallery and art spaces throughout the city.

Soon-to-close Exit Art is hosting most of these outliers, including Michael Bastian, Tim Coppens, and Alexandre Plokhov. Art and technology center Eyebeam comes in second, with six designers showing their collections there, among them Billy Reid, Catherine Malandrino, and Doo.Ri. The Pace Gallery, Lehmann Maupin Gallery, Danese Gallery, the Rubin Museum, Center 548, and the Hole are the other spaces that will host runways not art during New York Fashion Week.

So what makes a gallery a good spot to show a fashion collection? “They are the most beautiful spaces in the city,” Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte — who held their spring/summer 2012 runway show at the Pace Gallery — told us last season. “It's like putting something in a very clean environment where the only thing you're focusing on is pieces, so immediately it's just the collection and maybe the music and the set and the design of the show. That's hard to come by in a city where locations are pretty slim.”

Here is a schedule of Fashion Week presentations in art spaces.
