The brainchild of Daria "Dasha" Zhukova, 26, and supported by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the Center for Contemporary Culture Moscow will open in September with a retrospective of work by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, the couple's first in their native city. In the future, the center will commission site-specific installations and will feature emerging Russian artists. The center will operate as a nonprofit and seek funding internationally; Zhukova will be advised by an international council of experts including Tate director Nicholas Serota. On June 12 the CCC will host an exclusive party featuring a performance by British singer Amy Winehouse, an installation by Mexican artist Rafael Lozano Hemmer, and a small exhibition on Melnikov and the architect and engineer Vladimir Shukhov, who also collaborated on the garage. |
