Sparks! The William T. Kemper Collecting Initiative
May 3, 2008—July 20, 2008
This exhibition celebrates the remarkable gift to the Museum from the William T. Kemper Foundation––Commerce Bank, Trustee, which sparked a vigorous expansion of the Museum’s modern and contemporary collection. The foundation in 1999 gave the Nelson-Atkins $1million each year for 10 years, which resulted in the acquisition of 32 works of art. The works represent a broad sampling of 20th- and 21st-century art, from Marcel Duchamp’s portable museum of his life’s work, Box in a Valise, to a stunning work of aluminum liquor-bottle tops, Dusasa I, by an artist working in Nigeria, El Anatsui.
